Silent Auction

Hugh McKinney, Traditional Builder

Hugh McKiney, Traditional Builder, will demonstrate his skill at the Lancaster Historic Home Show, June 10, 11, 12, 2011.  Hugh will be building a Bake Oven, to be part of our Silent Auction to benefit Rock Ford Plantation.

The oven will be built on a steel pallet so that it can be moved to Hugh’s trailer and delivered to the lucky winner.  It will have a brick floor, the brick dome is approximately 3 feet wide on the inside and 4 feet long inside.  Antique brick will be used throughout.  Hydraulic lime and sand will be used as mortar.  The outside of the oven will be coated with two layers of clay and lime plaster.  The finished oven can be set on a masonry base on your patio and used to cook gourmet bread and pizza, along with anything else normally baked in an oven.  Everything tastes better cooked in a brick oven.

The oven is heated by building a moderate wood fire inside the dome.  After about 45 minutes to an hour, the fire is raked out of the oven through the front opening.  Food is place inside the dome, and the door and flue are closed off as the baking process begins.  Larger items are cooked first, as the oven cools, smaller items can be added for cooking.  It is a lot of fun learning to use a bake oven and with a little practice you can turn out incredibly delicious food.

Because of the unique nature of this creation, the Lancaster Historic Home Show requests a base bid of $1,500.00. Come witness this work of art being produced. All of you grill masters think of all the ways you can kick it- old school and be the envy of your neighborhood.
