John Leeke, American Preservationeer, Key-Note Speech; “Save Your Wood Windows” (or what the replacement window industry does not want you to know)

John Leeke has gained a substantial reputation as an advocate of conservation planning and maintenance programming as well as being a contributing editor to Old House Journal for the past twenty-seven years. A well-recognized preservation craftsman, Mr. Leeke has emerged in the past four decades as renowned advocate of building conservation principles in national trade and consumer publications and through a series of technical publications of his own.

Wendy J. Christie, Textile Expert Under cover, in reality under coverlet
Visually discover bed dressing in early 19th century rural Pennsylvania.  From coverlet to bed layers, like layers of an onion, different components of the bed will be revealed.  Attention will be given to form and fiber.  Discover the singular most important bed element  - the over feather bed and what makes Pennsylvania style so distinctive among early American bedding displays.  Ms. Christie is an educator and a scholar, for twenty-five years, her study has almost exclusively been defined by bedding and the PA German use of “homespun” linen. Ms. Christie continues the artist’s struggle to bring together decoration and scholarship.  Currently Wendy is working on a book about “women’s-work” and homespun.

Learn about the restoration of wooden window frames and sash, including paint removal and epoxy repair. Follow the process of a sash restoration from start to finish, explore the pros and cons of window weatherization.  This comprehensive session will take you from the restoration of wood windows through reinstallation and weatherizing.  An overview of the history of window and sash and glass will serve as a foundation for the presentation.

John Leeke Panel Discussion; “The Art and Science of Traditional Trades

Sit in on this thoughtful conversation presented by our panel and you are invited to bring your questions, thoughts, and ideas to share with the group.

Mr. Gene Aleci; RA, AIA, AICP, President, of Community Heritage Partners, LLC. now in its 25th year.  Along with being a Registered Architect licensed to practice in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Maine, Mr. Aleci ‘s certifications include the American Institute of Certified Planners, which qualifies him for practice as a city and town planner, a distinction among architects in Lancaster County and the region. He is also qualified under Federal standards by his professional experience as a preservation consultant and architect for Federal and state funded and approved historic preservation projects.  Mr. Aleci’s local work includes; advocacy for the retention of the Stevens and Smith Interpretive Center in the face of the development pressure of the new convention center, and full architectural services for the on-going reconstruction and conversion of five historic buildings surrounding the convention center.

Mr. Stuart Rowe, Custom Cabinet Maker, A woodworker for more than thirty years Mr. Rowe works almost exclusively for clients who need display cabinets for their priceless collections because of the museum quality of Mr. Rowe’s work.  Many homes from the Colorado Rockies, to the east coast have furniture pieces designed and crafted by Stuart Rowe.  Traditional trades are the heart of Preservation.

Mr. Hoffman is a third-generation craftsman with more than twenty years of experience in the preservation trades.  The scope of his work includes paint removal, interior and exterior painting, plaster wall restoration, wallpaper installation, shutter, door and window sash restorations.  Notable landmark projects include; The Sheldon House in Princeton, NJ, Locktown Friends Church, NJ and the Cornwall Iron Furnace, PA.  Mr. Hoffman has conducted numerous classes at the International Preservation Trades Workshop and Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference.

A. Thayer Smith; Decorative Plaster, Stone and Faux Metal Work “Plaster, Ceiling & Wall Art”
A licensed craftsman of Winterthur, A. Thayer Smith has built his reputation on his focus on restorations and decorative plaster. The ballroom and reproduction of the ornate ceiling of the music room at Longwood Gardens, the Clock tower  restoration of Trickett Hall at Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle and the recreation of missing Garden pieces and replication of numerous exterior stone  and lead pieces at Winterthur Museum and Country Estate, Nemours Museum and the Academy of Music. Mr. Smith is in demand in this overlooked traditional trade.
